Diarmuid McDonnell

Diarmuid is a social scientist with experience in academia, the public and voluntary sectors, and consultancy work. He completed his doctorate in collaboration with the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR), where he examined issues of risk and resilience in Scottish charities. Diarmuid then moved to the Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC) at the University of Birmingham to study long-run change in the UK voluntary sector, specifically longitudinal changes in the geographical founding of charities across local authorities. He is currently working for the UK Data Service designing and delivering training for social scientists on new forms of data (eg, web data, social media / network data).

His research focuses the following topics relating to the nonprofit / charity sector:

  • measuring and modelling risk;
  • evaluating regulatory interventions;
  • understanding accountability incentives;
  • constructing and tracking income profiles; and
  • measuring mission completion.
